What is the best way to study human anatomy in 1st year MBBS?

It took me a copious amount of time(a few months) to “actually” study Anatomy, which later turned out to be my piece of cake.

Lemme disclose some of the strategies, I followed.

  • Don't let the notion cripple your learning. Some people ramble around, “Anatomy is the difficult one!”. It's not when you’re in the right boat.

  • Understand the subject to fall in love with it. You'll find it effortlessly relishing when you start understanding things, why this particular muscle is named so, why ribs are obliquely placed, and so on.

  • Stop cramming things, you'll only for the least, hate the subject.

Watch video lectures online, before reading the texts. It works wonders!! Dissection and animated videos are of great help. Make the most outta them.

  • Kenhub, Anatomyzone are good sources of animations.

  • Dr.Mitesh Dave, Dr.Viren Kariya, Viva Voce of Anatomy, The Charsi of medical literature,Sam Webster are some good YouTube channels.

  • Have atleast a soft copy of Netter's atlas of Anatomy. Man, it has great pictures!

  • Be a dynamo in dissection halls, grab the opportunities and seize the day!

  • Look up to the standard texts, see if those are for you, just don't spend money, and let them stay in the cupboard.

  • Focus on clinical anatomy, they'll not just fetch you marks, it's a great step to keep you ahead as a budding doctor.

  • Look for mnemonics, or make your own, they make learning easy and fun!

Lemme give you an overview!

1.General Anatomy

Just read the text (BD Chaurasia/ Vishram Singh). Get along with the new terms.

2.Upper limb and Lower limb

  • Learn the osteology part. Dr. Viren Kariya is of great help!

  • Learn the muscles in the first place. Don't cram up with the origins, insertions(except for some important ones). Know their locations in the body, whether placed anteriorly or posteriorly. Nerve supply of muscles becomes handy, once you learn the nerves.

  • Nerves, arteries, veins: Trace their course from the beginning till the end at a stretch.

Eg: Median Nerve - Root value( origin), Median Nerve in the arm, forearm, hand, termination. Learn them all together. In BDC, you'll not find them altogether.

Make use of the videos👆

  • Learn the distinct ones separately: The cubital fossa, flexor and extensor retinaculum, the femoral triangle, and so on.

3.Thorax

An easier one!

  • Break it into chunks . Keep up the sequence!

  • Skim through the introduction part and the thoracic wall.

  • Mediastinum (animated videos are the best)

  • Pleura and lungs

  • Pericardium and heart(look for dissection videos)

  • Trachea (cervical and thoracic part), Oesophagus( cervical, thoracic, abdominal part). Learn them altogether.

  • Minor topics - thoracic duct, aorta ( ascending aorta, arch of aorta, descending thoracic aorta), pulmonary trunk, etc.

Watch lectures, and then start reading texts.

4.Abdomen & Pelvis

Abdomen:

  • Know the 9 quadrants of the abdomen before learning the organs.

  • Skim through the anterior abdominal wall, as the thoracic wall.
